Apathetic, Morally Corrupt, Or Mentally Ill - 2033 Words

Apathetic, morally corrupt, or mentally ill is the image the general public constructs when discussing torturers. The frightening reality is a trio of instructor, torturer, and a need of information could resort to torture (Vos 288). The lack of legality has hindered and morphed the methods of torture and its frequency throughout history but has never achieved elimination. In the beginning of human civilization, the ancient rulers set up criminal procedures that demonstrates a low stage of intellectual development. The criminal procedure included the process known as the â€Å"Judgement of God† which includes these brutal methods: whoever can hold their arms in the form of a cross the longest, thrust their arm in to a pot of boiling water without being forced to, walk through flames and fire without scorched limbs, or when opposite limbs [right arm to left leg] are tied together then thrown into a pool or stream; whoever survives is the just party. The legal system pairs with the stage of intellectual development of the human race (Wellings 193-194). [THESIS STATEMENT] Physical Torture was implemented in judicial law in several cultures using similar methods until the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms Article 3 in 1950. The main cause to inflict this form of torture is information extraction. Piaget s Theory On Cognitive Development - 1004 Words

Adolescence is a time of several changes. During adolescence people learn to become more autonomous. They become less reliant on their parents and more on themselves. One way they become more autonomous is cognitively. Many psychologists who study moral development use Piaget’s theory on cognitive development. These studies emphasize the change in reasoning that is used in making moral decisions. Psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg did a lot of research on the development of moral reasoning and expanded Piaget’s theory (Steinberg, 2008). He believed that moral development occurs in three levels and within those levels there are two distinct stages. At the first level, preconventional reasoning, there are the physical power stage and the instrumental relativism stage. In the physical power stage children focus heavily on punishments. In this stage, children are not as focused on the harm of the acts themselves, but whether or not there is a punishment associated with that act. In the instrumental relativism stage they are focused on rewards and â€Å"good† behaviors to them are whatever will be rewarded. At the next level, conventional reasoning, much of the focus is on social responsibility and law and order. The third stage, known as the good-boy/good-girl stage, individuals choose what behaviors are good or bad based on what will gain approval and make others happy. In the fourth stage, the law and order stage, people reason based on social order and set laws. Netflix Prize Roduction Algorithmic Culture -Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Netflix Prize Roduction Algorithmic Culture? Answer: Introduction The movie stream business model has challenged and replaced the traditional business model of video rentals (Chao, Hegarty and Fray 2016). Online streaming has enabled the customers to access high quality movies and videos instantly by connecting to the Internet. Technological advances helped customers to overcome the issues that they faced when they were dependent on traditional as well as DVD movie rentals. Customers started preferring online streaming as they could save their time and money. Blockbuster Video provided video rentals services in the US and even across the world (Davis and Higgins 2013). Customers used to take the movies by paying a certain fee and had to return within a given time else they were charged late fees. Netflix introduced the concept of DVD-by-mail service and later moved to online streaming followed by original programming (Cook 2014). This report focuses on describing how Netflix could beat the business of Blockbuster Video. It gives a brief overview of the history of Netflix as well as Blockbuster. It gives a detailed explanation of how Netflix beat Blockbuster by focusing on changing technology and pricing strategies. It discusses how online operations and innovations helped Netflix to achieve success and beat the business of Blockbuster. This report also shows what led to the failure of Qwikster and how Netflix regained its position through original programming. This report also carries out an analysis for predicting the future of Netflix. It tries finding out whether Netflix will remain to be the dominant provider of online movie and video streaming in the future. A brief history of Blockbuster In 1985, the first video rental store of Blockbuster Video was opened in Dallas, United States. David Cook founded Blockbuster after the demise of Cook Data Services in Texas. David Cook left the company in 1987 and sold it to the founder of Waste Management Inc. along with two other investors (Davis and Higgins 2013). In 1994, Viacom bought Blockbuster at a price of $8.4 billion. Blockbuster collected around $800 million as late fees that constituted to be more than ten percent the total revenue. It became the leader in the video rental market of the US and also across the world with more than 9000 video rental stores in 2004. After the entry of Netflix in the market, the business of Blockbuster was running at a loss (Freedman 2012). In 2010, it filed for getting protection against bankruptcy. The assets of Blockbuster were bought by Dish Network in 2011. Dish Network announced to close some of the rental stores in 2012 and in 2013 it announced the plan to close down all the remaini ng stores in the US. It was able to continue the operations of approximately ten stores in the United States. A brief history of Netflix Reed Hastings along with Marc Randolph co-founded Netflix in 1997 for enabling the people to get access to movie rentals over the Internet. Netflix.com website was launched in 1998 (Cook 2014). It started offering monthly subscription plan in 1999 that provided unlimited DVD or video rentals to the customers. In 2000, Netflix introduced an algorithm based recommendation system for accurately predicting movie preferences of the members depending on their previous movie ratings (Amatriain 2013). Netflix was able to gain 4.2 million members by 2005. It moved to online streaming in 2007 (Netflix Media Center 2018). Netflix started focusing on original programming and released Lilyhammer in 2012 followed by House of Cards in 2013. Netflix had spread its business worldwide by 2016. How Netflix beat Blockbuster Netflix introduced the concept of online rentals by utilizing the features of advanced technology such as the Internet and compressed technology (Lusted 2012). It moved from DVD-by-mail services to online streaming for the convenience of its members. The business of Netflix totally depended on the Internet technology (McDonald and Smith-Rowsey 2016). On the other hand, Blockbuster did not adopt advanced technologies. It was still operating its retail outlets in the US. Netflix developed a virtual platform for interacting with its client. It focused on a digital business model and data virtualization. Blockbuster failed to transform digitally and this had a negative impact on its business (Davis and Higgins 2013). One of its main technological initiatives was the recommendation system for suggesting movies to the members by analysing their movie ratings. Netflix had offered a prize of $1 million to anyone for providing a better and advanced algorithm for the recommendation system (Hal linan and Striphas 2016). Later on, Netflix focused on streaming technologies and online streaming for allowing its customers to easily access video contents in real-time. Open source technologies were used by Netflix for make maximum utilization of the customer data (Cook 2014). Blockbuster did not utilize online streaming and open source technologies for improving its business process (Freedman 2012). Netflix made maximum utilization of the Internet for delivering high quality video content to the members. Blockbuster on the other hand failed to see the spread of high speed broadband connections in the US. Netflix utilized data analytics technologies for dealing with a huge amount of customer data and enhancing its business operations (Amatriain 2013). Blockbuster on the other hand focused on increasing the number of retail outlets. The spread of high speed broadband connections in the US and enhanced video compression facilitated Netflix to grow its business at a fast rate and be at Blockbuster (Stelter 2013). The traditional business model of Blockbuster was responsible for the failure of its business. Retail outlets versus operating online Netflix utilized the benefits of online operations for achieving success in its business. With the increase of Internet usage in the US, Netflix succeeded in the market of video services and movie streaming (Stelter 2013). The internet-distributed video rental services led to the change of practices in the traditional television industry as well (Freedman 2012). Netflix developed a virtual platform for user interactions and enabled the users to place online orders for DVDs. It followed a DVD-by-mail technique for its business. Customers could stay at home and easily get access to movies at a cheaper cost as compared to the cost of hiring movie cassettes from retail outlets (Chao, Hegarty and Fray 2016). They were able to save the travelling cost as well as time. Hence, the online service provided by Netflix proved to be more convenient for the US customers as compared to the video rental services provided by the retail outlets (Cook 2014). Blockbuster did not make use of online opera tions and this affected its business growth. The online streaming services provided by Netflix enabled the customers to watch movies and play games at any time (McDonald and Smith-Rowsey 2016). Streaming allowed the customers to watch videos online without downloading it. Blockbuster retail stores had fewer movie collections as compared to the online library of Netflix. Netflix could save its operational costs by carrying out online operations (Lusted 2012). It did not have to spend money on sales executives and other staffs that are needed in any retail outlet. The virtual platform and online operations proved to be beneficial for Netflix and it could beat and disrupt the traditional business of Blockbuster. Pricing strategies The retail outlets of Blockbuster charged a fee for each rental. The customers could keep the video cassettes with them till a given time span (Freedman 2012). On the other hand, customers could access movies and videos at a much cheaper price by becoming a member of Netflix (Stelter 2013). The pricing strategy of Netflix was to follow a monthly subscription model. The prepaid subscription pricing plan provided unlimited access to rentals with no late fines. But on the other hand, Blockbuster charged late fees for not returning the cassettes within the specified time (Davis and Higgins 2013). A significant percentage of its revenue constituted the late fees. The subscription strategy proved to be more convenient for the customers and helped Netflix to retain more customers (McDonald and Smith-Rowsey 2016). The customers did not have to worry about their monthly expense. But Blockbuster on the other used a pay-per-rental model that was inconvenient for the customers (Lusted 2012). Thi s prepaid subscription strategy helped Netflix to improve its business stability. It saved customers effort and time (Cook 2014). Blockbuster on the other hand could not enhance its business stability and simplify business processes by using a traditional pricing model. The customers in the US preferred the subscription pricing strategy of Netflix over the traditional pay-per-rental strategy of Blockbuster. Cost leadership strategies focus on reducing cost and increasing profit by charging the customers an industry-average price or lower prices as compared to its competitors. Netflix followed a differentiation strategy where it focused on providing online rentals and video streaming (Allen, Feils and Disbrow 2014). It provided a unique service as the concept of online rentals were not used by its competitors. Netflix made proper use of the Internet technology and the postal services of the US for achieving success in the differentiation strategy and gained competitive advantage over Blockbuster. Blockbuster did not utilize the differentiation strategy and this adversely affected its business to a great extent. The differentiation strategy is suitable for Netflix. Netflix constantly focuses on improving its services for creating uniqueness in the market of movie streaming and online rentals. Netflixs innovations Netflix started its business by introducing online rentals and DVD-by-mail services in the country. Netflix focused on innovation and created a virtual platform for operating its rental services (McDonald and Smith-Rowsey 2016). Blockbuster on the other hand, operated physical retail outlets in the US. Netflix got the first mover advantage in the US as there were only video rental outlets in the country. It was the first to introduce the concept of online video rentals in the market. Netflix disrupted the existing market of video rentals of Blockbuster and proved to be a disruptive leader (Davis and Higgins 2013). To enhance the experience of the customers, Netflix developed a recommendation system that worked on an advanced algorithm and gave appropriate movie suggestions to the customers. This algorithm worked on the previous movie ratings gave by the customers (Hallinan and Striphas 2016). The innovation of the recommendation system helped Netflix to gain competitive advantage in the market. But Blockbuster did not focus on innovations. Lack of innovation led to the downfall of Blockbuster. Later on, Netflix realised the importance of online streaming and focused on providing video streaming services across the US. The concept of online streaming also gave the first mover advantage to Netflix in the US. Online streaming helped the Netflix members to watch movies in real-time without downloading it (Stelter 2013). Netflix kept on innovating and improving its services whereas Blockbuster was still trying to rent video cassettes in a traditional manner. The next innovation of Netflix was to produce original contents. Blockbuster on the other hand just focused on increasing the number of stores and could not predict the future of the video rental industry in the US (Freedman 2012). Blockbuster lagged on innovations and did not adopt advanced technologies in its business processes. Original programming increased the revenue of Netflix and increased the number of its subscribers (Tryon 2015). Appropriate future prediction and continuous innovation led to the success of Netflix. Will Netflix remain the dominant provider of online video streaming? Netflix announced in the month July, 2011 about a hike in the price of their combined online streaming and DVD-by-mail services. Later on, Netflix announced the plan for separating the video streaming and DVD-by-mail services for improving both the services. It planned to create Qwikster for handling the DVD-by-mail services (Som.yale.edu 2018). After the announcement of the Qwikster plan, Netflix lost more than 800,000 subscribers or members along with a drop in its stock price. Netflix decided to end the plan of Qwikster but stick to its plan of price hike. The Qwikster plan had failed due to several reasons. The change of name had confused the people. The Qwikster name could be easily misspelled. New users would get confused and might not understand that Netflix and Qwikster were owned by the same company. Splitting of Netflix into two websites meant that the users had to create two separate accounts. They needed to undergo two separate billing procedures for the two companies. Th e separate websites would mean separate ratings for both the websites, despite being a part of Netflix (Stelter 2013). Another main reason for the failure of Qwikster was the assumption that DVD-by-mail service had no future. It was assumed that Netflix wanted to focus on online streaming as it had a huge scope in the future. Netflix needed to recreate its ratings as well as customer preferences on Qwikster. Although this plan might have seemed to be good from the business perspectives, customers did not support this idea. Qwikster would offer DVDs to the customers and an optional upgrade was needed for accessing video games. It would not offer both the services to the users on joining Qwikster. Netflix had lost several subscribers resulting in business loss (Allen, Feils and Disbrow 2014). Netflix realised that the customers were unhappy with the Qwikster plan and had dropped the plan. Netflix rebuilds: The rise of original content Netflix regained its market position by focusing in the production of original contents. It realised that more customers could be attracted by offering original contents rather than renting movies that are produced by others (Tryon 2015). It made huge investments in the original programming. Its first original content Lilyhammer was debuted in the year 2012. In 2013, Netflix released its original content, House of Cards that was based on a political drama. The production of original content played a significant role in the success of Netflix (Netflix Media Center 2018). Original programming could retain the existing subscribers of Netflix and also attract new subscribers. Netflix started focusing on original content production as it wanted the customers to keep subscribing for a long time and reduce the sudden cancellation of the subscription plan (Stelter 2013). Original programming could help Netflix to introduce a hike in the service prices in the near future without any issue. Ne tflix could reduce its operational cost by adopting the concept of original programming (Cook 2014). The cost of licensing was increasing and this created a problem for Netflix. Netflix faced several issues in acquiring the license for the contents of other producers. The production of original content and programming proved to be beneficial for Netflix (McDonald and Smith-Rowsey 2016). Netflix was able to illustrate its authority, increase the SEO ranking and increase the website traffic by creating original contents. Netflix focused on original programming for achieving long term benefits. Its main aim was to beat the business of HBO (Amatriain 2013). The production of original content attracted several customers from the US. The original content created for the US market resulted in huge success. Netflix was able to gain competitive advantage in the market of online streaming by producing original contents. The future of Netflix Netflix plans to spend around $8 billion on original programming in 2018. Its main focus is to fill its online library with 50 percent original contents. It is planning to release 80 films in the year 2018. Netflix believes that original programming will help to raise the service price in a continuous manner without causing any problem (Tryon 2015). Netflix has planned to increase the subscription plan by $1 in every month. Its focus is on offering a $15 subscription plan for beating the business of HBO. The concept of original programming can help Netflix to remain the leader in the video streaming market of the US. Original programming can help Netflix to build its credibility (Cook 2014). Netflix could predict the future of the video streaming industry and aimed to move into original programming. Netflix has several risks as well. Its competitors in the market are trying to catch up with the business model of Netflix (Harvard Business Review 2018). It has a risk of brand dilution if the movies are not much compelling. The original contents produced by Netflix is expected to act as its key differentiator in the video streaming market and help to retain its leading position in the US (Stelter 2013). Netflix also aims to become like Disney and produce animated video contents. The hike in subscription plan can help Netflix in generating more revenues in the future. Netflix has the capability to become a must subscribe channel over the Internet across the US market. High quality original contents will help Netflix to secure a leading position in the video streaming market. Innovative business strategies and models can help the business of Netflix to attain competitive advantage in the market (Allen, Feils and Disbrow 2014). Although there are several risks that Netflix can face in the future, it is still expected to be the dominant provider of online video streaming in the US market. Conclusion This report analysed the innovations along with the future plans of Netflix and said that Netflix can remain to be the leader in the movie streaming industry of the US in future. It showed how Netflix adopted advanced technologies for beating the traditional business model of Blockbuster. Customer experience got enhanced with the introduction of online retailing. This report showed that customers started preferring the virtual platform of Netflix over the retail outlets of Blockbuster as they could save their time as well as cost. It said that the disruptive innovation strategy and the prepaid subscription pricing model of Netflix played a major role in achieving success. Some of the disruptive innovations of Netflix were DVD-by-mail services, development of the recommendation system and original programming. According to this report, Netflix got the first mover advantage in the US for providing online streaming services. This report predicted the future of Netflix. It said that Netf lix wanted to split its DVD-by mail and online streaming businesses. It had planned to create Qwikster for handling the DVD-by-mail services. According to this report, Qwikster plan failed because the customers did not support the idea of creating two separate accounts and paying separate bills. The price hike and the Qwikster plan led to the loss of over 800,000 subscribers. This report showed how Netflix regained its position by producing original contents. Netflix can maintain market dominance by focusing on original programming. Production of high quality original content would help Netflix to minimize competition and attain further success in the future. According to this report, Netflix has several market risks in the future. Netflix is mainly focusing on producing original content and filling 50 percent of its online library with original contents. It has a plan of investing $8 million in original contents in the year 2018. This report concludes that production of original co ntent can help Netflix to remain the dominant provider of video streaming in the US. References; Allen, G., Feils, D. and Disbrow, H., 2014. The Problem of Alcoholism Essay Example For Students

The Problem of Alcoholism Essay The Black slaves of colonial America brought their own culture from Africa to the new land. Despite their persecution, the \slave culture\ has contributed greatly to the development of Americas own music, dance, art, and clothing. Music It is understandable that when Africans were torn from their homes and families, lashed into submission, and forced into lifelong slave labor, they would be, on the most part, resentful and angry. Various forms of expression, clandestine yet lucent, developed out of these feelings. One such form of this was music. Native African music consisted mainly of wind and string melodies punctuated by hand clapping, xylophones, and drumbeats. Along those lines, an early type of slave music was the spiritual, which has its roots in Protestant hymns taught to the slaves. Spirituals were long thought to be the spontaneous creation of African-American slaves and the only original folk music of the U. S. Spirituals told tales of suffering and struggle, but these true meanings were often hidden. An example is in the song \Gospel Train\ with the lyrics, \Get on board, little children/Theres room for many a-more/The gospel trains a-leavin The \gospel train\ of the song likely represented an escape method, such as the Underground Railroad. Another type of music distinct to African slaves was gospel. These songs originated in plantation fields as work songs, and were later sung in churches of Black congregations. They were intended to enliven a crowd, and employed bright music and joyful lyrics. Gospel music contributed to the development of musical genres historically considered \white\, such as rocknroll and country and western. Religion Before Blacks came to America, they had their own highly developed religious beliefs. Most cultures believed in one almighty God, and the ideas of good and evil. They also practiced \ancestor worship\, believing that dead family members could influence aspects of their lives. A main difference between African and Christian religions, however, is that Africans did not find it necessary to convert all other cultures to their religion. Thus Africans were rather resistant to the preaching of Christian ministers when they came to America. The Christian ideas they did absorb, however, were indoctrinated into their lives with the addition of culture such as gospel music. Later, a minister of mainly of African-American congregations would use distinctly \Black\ preaching methods, as when the minister begins to employ numerous stock phrases and ideas, Midway in the message the preacher begins to chant his words rhythmically. Art 17th-century Africans had art forms that would be considered advanced even today. Most of their expression was religious in nature. But when they were brought to the New World, slaves could not do this because Protestants had always frowned upon religious imagery in the church as being worldly. Thus, there was little opportunity for the slaves to express his or her creativity in graphic and plastic art for the church as they had done in Africa where religion and art were inseparable. Moreover, the slave was afforded few opportunities to carve on his own time let alone the masters time. This repression of the slaves creativity doubtlessly impeded the development of an African-American art standard. Although slaves could be trained in the practical arts, such as typesetting or furniture making, they could really not fully express themselves until released from the bonds of servitude. Incidentally, there was an outpouring of African-American art after emancipation. This was a time when former slaves could finally put their creativity to use, and the results were a genre individual in itself, yet complimentary to American art as a whole. Blacks became sculptors, painters, block printers, actors, and architects. .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d , .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d .postImageUrl , .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d , .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d:hover , .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d:visited , .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d:active { border:0!important; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d:active , .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udb998ae0e09336a4155394e8a33e9c6d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Civil Disobedience EssayBut it would be a long time yet before Black art could be fully appreciated, or even accepted as mainstream. Science Americas earliest African-American scientists and inventors are largely unknown their contributions to America buried in anonymity. While historians increasingly recognize that blacks had a significant impact on the design and construction of plantations and public buildings in the South and that rice farming in the Carolinas might not have been possible without Blacks, the individuals who spearheaded these accomplishments remain anonymous. The previous information as stated, describes an all too-common situation in African-American history where the Accomplishments of Blacks are claimed as those of whites, or not recognized at all. Some scientific discoveries, however, are duly attributed to famous African-Americans. One such invention was the grain harvester, historically credited to Cyrus McCormick. Though, as new research tells us, Jo Anderson, one of McCormicks slaves, is believed to have played a major role in the creation of the McCormick harvester. On the other hand, much more credit for invention was given to freed slaves, such as Henry Blair, the patent-holder for a seed planter, and Augustus Jackson, for the invention of ice cream. The sad truth of the matter is, as with accomplishments in art, early inventions and scientific discoveries by Blacks were simply not heralded with interest. It was not until much later, after the slaves were freed, that Blacks would be respected as scientists. It may be that Africans had scientific methods native to Africa that they brought to the New World, but these were overlooked by supremacist slave-owners and gradually disappeared. Linguistics Of course, African slaves had their own language before they came to America. But what happened to this language when they were taken from their homeland and immersed in English- Speaking society? As would be expected, they adapted to the English language retaining distinctly African subtleties. The changes made to English by Black slaves are still seen today in the African-American vernacular. This altered language is sometimes referred to as \Black English. Much of the way Black English is spoken, it seems grammatically incorrect but it actually represents the consistent application of African structural principles. In other words, phrases such as \aint\ and \wasnt\ that are wrong in English would have made perfect sense in an African language. Conclusion Considering that Africans had to start as slaves and \work their way up\, the contributions of Black Americans are astounding. Their advancements in music, art, religion, language, and science have helped shape American culture as a whole.

Laboratory and My Last Duchess free essay sample

It is important to be able to define what disturbed actually means in order to answer this question to a high standard of explanation. Disturbed is an adjective and it is the showing of symptoms of mental illness, severe psychosis and neurosis. It is also useful to consider the audiences of each poem or play to elaborate on explanations. Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, is set during the eleventh century is about the emotional manipulation of individuals and the lust for power and the upmost authority over a victorious Scotland featuring an Elizabethan audience whereas Robert Brownings poems, Laboratory and My Last Duchess, is about the overcoming of Jealously and betrayal set during the Victorian era with a Victorian audience. Macbeth in the beginning of the play is a noble, humble and honourable person who, without question would sacrifice his life for the liberty of his King, Duncan. As the play progresses he attitude towards life in general changes completely, mainly due to the pressure that Lady Macbeth inflicts on him. We will write a custom essay sample on Laboratory and My Last Duchess or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page However, Lady Macbeth has quite a surprising personality as she is not the stereotypical Elizabethan woman. Lady Macbeth is expected to be fragile, meek, innocent and comforting but in this unusual circumstance Lady Macbeth would very much rather dashed the brains out of an infant child. This is plain evidence to suggest that Lady Macbeth is of no stable condition. In addition to this surprising fact Lady Macbeth is cunning and bloodthirsty. She demands Macbeth in Act one, Scene Five to look like thinnocent flower, but be the serpent undert. It is very common for a man to demand a female to pursue tasks but for a woman to demand a man, especially of something like acrilege, is very unusual. This could mean two things, Macbeth is weak and is unable to depict his own decisions or/and that Macbeth is mentally deteriorating. Macbeth reason with Lady Macbeths orders in his soliloquy in Act one, Scene seven and from the things he points out such as his faculties are so meek gives the reader/viewer sympathy for Macbeth suggests that Macbeth is of a stable condition and is able to rationalize his views and interpretation we will proceed no further in this business. Lady Macbeth realises that herself and Macbeth in Act one, Scene Five are too full 0th milk of human kindness and therefore aggressively requests to the spirits unsex me here and fill me here from the crown to the toe-top full of direst cruelty. The tone and images that are tagged along with this quote are very dark and cold hearted, also notice the word used to describe the type of cruelty, full of direst cruelty. Not only does Lady Macbeth want to be cruel but she wants to be completely full of the direst cruelty. It is at this exact point when it becomes possible to claim hat Lady Macbeth is at the top of the spiral to insanity. The choice of language is compelling as if she felt no sympathy for King Duncan. Lady Macbeth uses harsh and violent sounding vocabulary to stress her ambitions Hie thee hither, the use of alliteration attracts the attention of audience signifying that she purposely wants people to know really how serious she is similarly in Laboratory the persona demonstrates her willingness to commit a felony Grind away, moisten and mash up thy paste, pound at thy powder, there is a use ot harsh and violent sounding ocabulary and there is a use of alliteration to make an appeal to the audience. During the Elizabethan era a particular doctrine was in place because of the religious relationship involved with that patriarchal society, a feudal system was in place meaning that Sacrilege was unfaithful to such an extent that Hell was certain to be your destination. The fact that Lady Macbeth urges Macbeth to commit sacrilege is, without saying, disturbing because the King (especially at that time) is Gods representative and killing God Just to achieve power is so insane that you could argue hat she is demon possessed. Macbeth and the poem Laboratory are both similar in terms of the unusual language used, Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, a quote by Macbeth in his final soliloquy, in act five, scene five, before to his soliloquy Lady Macbeth had committed suicide which was inevitably an act of sin and therefore the afterlife would be spend in hell for eternity Weld Jump the life to come. But in these cases We still have Judgment here, which meant Macbeth and Lady Macbeth (at least Macbeth) were both aware that they had committed felonies uring their current life including sacrilege giving the idea that Macbeth was aware of his wrongdoings telling us that Macbeth was not psychotically weak but instead attempted to improvise the situation so at least he had something to live for. This also gives the audience sympathy for Macbeth because he is able to rationalize his opinions and Justifications. The persona uses similar unusual language to Macbeth And her breasts and her arms should drop dead! Stanza six, the repetition of the connective and in the Macbeth and the Laboratory poem is used to emphasis their eelings and emotions. In addition to this the persona in Laboratory uses an exclamation mark at the end of her sentence revealing to us that she is certain that she wants this devil orientated scenario to occur in reality, on the other hand, Macbeth says his quote (mentioned above) in a calm, soothing manner. I am able to say this because Macbeth uses no form of extreme punctuation to object otherwise. This obviously is a difference suggesting that Macbeth is in fact sane because he is clearly pointing out that he has realised that lifes but a walking shadow. There are indeed multiple differences that make Laboratory and Macbeth very unalike indeed. The largest and most obvious variance between these two highly interpreted pieces of literature is that Laboratory is actually a poem of emotion and the outburst of frustration. The persona in Laboratory can be argued to be neurotic because of her intentions but these are Just intentions whereas in Macbeth Lady Macbeths intentions are fulfilled, the killing of King Duncan. Laboratory is very much an extreme retaliation of revenge and hatred.

Ozone Layer Depletion free essay sample

This will cause humans suffering like skin cancer and UV radiation may kill plankton. CFCs will also cause global warming. We should take action to protect our ozone layer. We have to ban the use of CFCs products. United State have already signed a treaty to phase out CFC production, known as the Montreal Protocol. Besides, we should always unplug or switch off electronic instruments when they are not in use. We can plant trees as they absorb the UV rays and try to use products which are labeled ‘Ozone-Friendly’. In conclusion, we should start now to care for and save our earth. Introduction Ozone is a gas that occurs naturally in our atmosphere. Most of it is concentrated in the ozone layer, a region located in the stratosphere several miles above the surface of the Earth. Although ozone represents only a small fraction of the gas present in the atmosphere, it plays a vital role by shielding humans and other life from harmful ultraviolet light from the Sun. We will write a custom essay sample on Ozone Layer Depletion or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In fact, a major hole in the ozone layer above the Antarctica skyline now threatens the continent badly. There are plenty of causes and effects of ozone depletion, CFC emission being one. Findings Factor of Ozone Depletion Human activities in the last several decades have produced chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). It has been released into the atmosphere and has contributed to the depletion of this important protective layer. In fact, the most important cause which accounts for almost 80% of the total depletion of ozone layer in the stratosphere are CFCs. Beder (unknown) stress the ozone layer is being broken down by chlorine atoms from CFC molecules and bromine atoms from halons. These compounds are very stable in the lower atmosphere of the earth. While in the stratosphere, they break down to release a free chlorine atom due to ultraviolet radiation. A free chlorine atom reacts with an ozone molecule (O3) and forms chlorine monoxide (ClO) and a molecule of oxygen. Now chlorine monoxide reacts with an ozone molecule to form a chlorine atom and two molecules of oxygen. The free chlorine molecule again reacts with ozone to form chlorine monoxide. The process continues and the result is the reduction or depletion of ozone in the stratosphere. Effect of Ozone Depletion Therefore, these factors bring a lot of problem on our daily life. For examples, LensMan999 (unknown) stresses that the ozone depletion will lead an increase in the percentage of skin cancer and cataracts. In addition, figure 1 from the reference shows that the UV radiation may damage crops, kill plankton that serve as a food source for marine life. The human immune system also will be affected. CFCs may trap heat and thus contribute to the global warming. As ScienceDaily (2011) shows ozone hole linked to climate change all the way to the equator. Solution on Ozone Layer Depletion September 16 was voted the world ozone day in the year 1994 by the United Nations General Assembly. This proves ozone depletion is a big issue that needs attention. Hence, we should be aware and actions must be taken to ensure that ozone layer is not destroyed. Firstly, we have to ban the use of CFCs product as it contains a lot of ozone depleting substances (ODS). But it is difficult to do so because so many products including refrigerator, air-conditioning, cleaning agents and so on contains this product. CFCs would remain in the stratosphere for another 100 years if none we have taken for the problem. Developed countries like the United States have already signed a treaty to phase out CFC production. On the date of 16th September 1987, the Montreal Protocol to prevent ozone depletion was opened for signing. Villanueva (2010) explain that it is a testimony of what humans can achieve when they put their minds and strengths together to face a common threat. Montreal Protocol, 30 nations worldwide agreed to reduce usage of CFCs and encouraged other countries to do so as well. By the year 2000, the United States and twelve nations in Europe have agreed to ban all use and production of CFCs. This will be highly significant as these countries produce three quarters of the CFCs’ product in the world. (Harankhedkar 2011) Many other countries have signed treaties and written laws restricting the use of CFCs. Companies are finding substitutes for CFCs, and people in general are becoming more awareness of the dangers of ozone layer depletion. At last, The Montreal Protocol has resulted in stopping additional ozone loss and investigated by 300 experts ver 4 years survey on ozone depletion Earth Day was first observed on 22 April 1970. An estimated 20 million people nationwide attended this festivity which came the largest grassroots environmental Besides that, not only the government but also the residents have a role to play and avoid ozone depletion. We should always unplug or switch off the electronic instruments when they are not in use. We also are encouraged to walk and avoid using vehicles if we can. Simple measures like using public transportation instead of our own private vehicle will help a big deal. We can plant trees from now as they produce oxygen and absorb the UV rays greatly. We can try to use products which are labeled â€Å"Ozone-Friendly†. We are suggested to use the renewable sources, for examples, wind, solar energy, and so on. D. Brack (1997) reminds the United Nations officers that they have a role to play to produce and ensure that the new equipment purchased is ODS-free. Conclusion As you see, most ozone depletion resulted from the human activities. Hence, we should always remind ourselves and raise awareness on the ozone depletion. Making small changes in our habit can make a difference in our future. Although those CFCs’ product are making our lives so comfortable but we should start now to care for and save our earth. Recommendations Government should always take action. Not only to organize the â€Å"Earth Day† on 22 April but also to find the way of looking on the residents’ co-operation. Citizens should always support the government and do their own respond of how to protect our ozone layer. Companies should not use the ODS and turn to product that is ozone-friendly as many as possible. Ozone layer depletion free essay sample The increased cancer levels caused by exposure to this ultraviolet light could be enormous. Recent studies estimates that 60 million Americans born by the year 2075 will get skin cancer because of ozone depletion. About one million of these people will die. In addition to cancer, some research shows that a decreased ozone layer will increase rates of malaria and other infectious diseases. According to recent studies 17 million more cases of cataracts can also be expected. . The environment will also be negatively affected by ozone depletion. The life cycles of plants will change, disrupting the food chain. Effects on animals will also be severe, and are very difficult to foresee. Oceans will be hit hard as well. The most basic organisms such as plankton may not be able to survive. If that happened, it would mean that all of the other animals that are above plankton in the food chain would also die out. We will write a custom essay sample on Ozone layer depletion or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Other ecosystems such as forests and deserts will also be harmed. The planets climate could also be affected by depletion of the ozone layer. Wind patterns could change, resulting in climatic changes throughout the world. Global warming is the continuing rise in the average temperature of Earths atmosphere and oceans. Global warming is caused by increased concentrations of green house gases in the atmosphere, resulting from human activities such as deforestation and burning of fossil fuels. Some of the effects of global warming and climate change on the environment include the folloing Ozone Layer Depletion free essay sample The ozone layer protects the Earth from the ultraviolet rays sent down by the sun. If the ozone layer is depleted by human action, the effects on the planet could be catastrophic. In recent years, the ozone layer has been the subject of much discussion. And rightly so, because the ozone layer protects both plant and animal life on the planet. The atmosphere is divided into five layers:   the troposphere, the stratosphere, the mesosphere, the thermosphere, and the exosphere. The troposphere is the layer closest to earth and is where all weather happenings occur. The stratosphere is located directly above the troposphere, about 10-50 kilometers above the planet, and houses the ozone layer at an altitude of 20-30 kilometers. The mesosphere is located approximately 50-80 kilometers above the earth, while the thermosphere rests at an altitude of approximately 100-200 kilometers above the earth’s surface. Finally, the boundary of the outermost layer, the exosphere, extends roughly to 960-1000 kilometers above the earth. We will write a custom essay sample on Ozone Layer Depletion or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Figure 1:   Earths atmosphere is divided into layers, which have various characteristics. The ozone levels have decreased to a normal level. Normal meaning the levels have dropped from the levels reported in 1980. The ozone layer is an important and fragile part of earth. If we did not have an ozone layer between 10km and 50km, high ultraviolet radiation would pour through. This would create harmful living conditions for all life forms. The fact that the ozone layer was being depleted was discovered in the mid-1980s. The main cause of this is the release of CFCs, chlorofluorocarbons. Antarctica was an early victim of ozone destruction. A massive hole in the ozone layer right above Antarctica now threatens not only that continent, but many others that could be the victims of Antarcticas melting icecaps. In the future, the ozone problem will have to be solved so that the protective layer can be conserved. The ozone layer:   What is it? The ozone layer is a portion of earth’s atmosphere that contains high levels of ozone. The ozone found in our atmosphere is formed by an interaction between oxygen molecules (composed of two oxygen atoms) and ultraviolet ight. When ultraviolet light hits these oxygen molecules, the reaction causes the molecules to break apart into single atoms of oxygen. These single atoms of oxygen are very reactive, and a single atom combines with a molecule of oxygen to form ozone, which is composed of three atoms of oxygen. The ozone layer protects the Earth from the ultraviolet rays sent down by the sun. If the ozone layer is depleted b y human action, the effects on the planet could be catastrophic. The ozone layer is essential for human life. It is able to absorb much harmful ultraviolet radiation, preventing penetration to the earth’s surface. Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is defined as radiation with wavelengths between 290-320 nanometers, which are harmful to life because this radiation can enter cells and destroy the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of many life forms on planet earth. In a sense, the ozone layer can be thought of as a ‘UV filter’ or our planet’s ‘built in sunscreen’ (Geocities. com, 1998). Without the ozone layer, UV radiation would not be filtered as it reached the surface of the earth.
